A flash of insight is an amazing thing: “Oh, I see! I totally get what I should do!”
But then, even though we get it, we don’t always do the new thing. Why? Because behavioral change is a physiological process, not a mental one.
If we want to build an insight into a behavior that becomes a habit, we have to grow new neurons in our brain to support that behavior. Neurons do not grow in flashes, they take time.
This is why the multiple books about building habits tell us the way to truly change is through tiny, daily, incremental practice. Daily practice encourages the neurons to grow. Patience gives the neurons the time they need.
When I give my brilliant and sometimes impatient tech industry leader clients the tools and tips to deliver a talk with confidence or answer questions with skill, I remind them that what I’m really doing is inviting them to retrain their brains. It’s up to them to practice the new skill until it becomes a habit.
Three hours of coaching with me WILL give you some great insights, but it will not make you a great communicator. This is not a one-and-done process!
You become a great communicator when you put what you learned (from your fabulous coach) into practice every day. You can almost feel those neurons growing, can’t you?
Take the risk out of being in the spotlight! I can prepare you, your teams and your leaders to tell your company’s story with confidence, shape the industry and maybe even change the world.
