My Dad always used to say, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.”
My Dad (and Henry Ford, who coined the phrase) were right. It drove me crazy when he said this, because I knew he was right. I’d go off in a huff to tackle whatever I didn’t think I could do because my Dad certainly wasn’t going to help me or do it for me.
Here’s the thing about being a great communicator. Whether you think you can or you can’t give a great keynote, you’re right. Whether you think you can or you can’t rally your team to survive your killer WFIO moment, you’re right. Whether you think you can or you can’t do a good interview on CNBC Squawk Box, you’re right.
So, how about you decide you can do it?
Once you’ve made that decision it’s a simple matter of getting to work and getting the right help.
Get to work on your story. If you and your team need help building a great message, there are so many places to get great help and advice (including for free on poseyblog!).
Get to work on your delivery. The equation is mind-numbingly simple. Practice = confidence.
Practicing can feel artificial and awkward – especially practicing in front of other people. But “I’ve done this ten times, I’ve got this” is much better than “Well, here goes nothing!”
Practice in the shower. Practice on your commute. Practice in front of your dog. Practice builds comfort. Comfort builds confidence. When you feel confident as a communicator, you become natural and articulate.
If you need a communications coach, get one. I know a great one, and there are so many other wonderful coaches and trainers that can help you build the confidence you need.
Deciding to see yourself as a great communicator is the first step to becoming one! Good luck!!
