Being a PR person can be hard. No one else is going to tell the CEO that she looks like she’s picking her nose when she touches it when she’s nervous. But the PR person has to tell her! Because a CEO who looks like she’s picking her nose every time she’s on CNBC is a PR problem.
So, CEO, want to help your PR person? Want to avoid awkward conversations? Watch clips of yourself – not just when you’re doing broadcast interviews, but when you’re doing your all hands meeting or an industry talk. If you take the time, you can see and intervene on those funny little tics (we all have them) before your PR person has to point them out to you.
And, by the way, when your PR person does come and tell you about that weird thing you do with your nose, please just say “thank you”. You may feel awkward hearing it, but I promise you she feels much more awkward telling you!
