I’ve got a funny relationship with optimism and pessimism. After working in corporate PR for decades I’m pretty jaded about business and government leaders. When a CEO or anyone in government makes a stupid decision with painful consequences, I’m not surprised or indignant. I just shrug. Of course that’s what happened.
But when it comes to individual humans, I hope for the best. I believe that we do try and sometimes even succeed at getting better. I see it every day in my work as a communications coach – people who bring discipline, humility, and a good dose of hope as they face their fear of delivering a compelling keynote, a masterful media interview, an inspiring all-hands.
I may be pessimistic about the world, but I am happily and doggedly optimistic about the people in it. I’m so glad to help great people master the skills they need to do their part to create the positive change we all need.
