I simply adore Dwayne Johnson – he’s as real about hard work, gratitude and humility as any human I’ve ever seen. This December he launched his Seven Bucks Moment campaign, a series of videos that start with him telling his own story of abject failure. He is an incredibly successful person who embodies humility. Seven Bucks Moment is a great contribution to our culture. It couldn’t come at a better time!
In Silicon Valley we talk about failure all the time. We talk less about gratitude. Every founder rising from a failure to a triumph is supported by so many people. Read Arnold Schwarzenegger’s essay “I am not a self-made man” in Tim Ferriss’s excellent new book Tools of Titans. It’s a bracing reminder of the power of gratitude.
Finally, my favorite example of grit – Eddie Howe. Eddie is the manager of AFC Bournemouth, the team he has led up the food chain of English soccer until they reached the Premier League. “He has an insatiable appetite for self-development,” says Eddy’s boss, Jeff Mostyn. Grit shows up in a lot of ways – muscles are one way that’s obvious. Determination, fierce commitment and resilience may not be visible when you look at person, but you can always see their grit in the contribution they make in the world.
