My head loves worst-case scenario thinking. It was great when I was a PR person who needed to envision and prepare for any potential crisis, but it’s not so awesome when I’m just trying to live my life.
One tool I’ve learned from a few coaches is surprisingly effective. As we prepare for 2023, it’s a great exercise.
Take a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle. On the left side, write all of the negative thoughts, ideas, messages you think about yourself, your career, the world, whatever. On the right side, write down an opposite, positive statement for each idea. For example, if on the left you wrote: “My skills are no longer relevant”, on the right side you’d write: “I learn new skills all the time” or “My experience is rare and valuable”.
Once you’ve written down a positive statement opposite each negative idea, you cut the piece of paper in half and throw away all of the negative statements. Then you cling to those positive statements as you prepare yourself for the year ahead.
Got it? Good luck!!
