If you’ve been spending time wondering what’s going to happen to humanity as AI gets more and more ‘Super’ and more ‘Generalized’, may I recommend The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells? The first four novellas were published in 2017 and 2018. There are three longer novels and a few short stories that follow. I’ve devoured them all. And I’m watching the Apple TV+ show with glee.
Wells writes extraordinary AI characters. She sets up situations for the humans and AIs to cooperate together, which they do, mainly productively. There are obstacles that require both artificial and human intelligence to solve. What I really love, besides Murderbot’s inner monologue, is the way the AIs and the humans partner together. What they accomplish when they work in concert is pretty amazing.
None of us knows what AGI or Superintelligence will look and feel like and what role we humans will play when it is here, but I love seeing the example of negotiated, productive co-existence in The Murderbot Diaries!
