I always say that I “pair the principles and practices of executive coaching with 30 years in communications – a rare and powerful combination.” But what does that mean?
Well, in helping innovators become great communicators I do basically three things.
First: What to say. I help organizations and people define clear, compelling messages. A strong message that’s been distilled and vetted is the foundation for every internal or external communication to any audience. I’ve helped clients create complete corporate message architectures, prepare powerful keynote speeches, and even decide what to say in an e-mail to diffuse conflict.
Second: How to say it. I train my clients on techniques – especially for doing media interviews and presentations – but that’s just the beginning! Learning to be a great communicator is about understanding who you are, what your role requires of you (a CEO carries the role of pater familias in her organization), understanding what the people with whom you are communicating need and want. Sometimes a 1:1 becomes the most important communication you’ll do all quarter! It’s best practice to be clear and deliberate, going deep on every audience and every major communications opportunity.
Third: Why to say it. Every communication is an opportunity to help your audiences build a relationship with your brand, your organization, and with you. Every communication opportunity can also a profound development opportunity for you as a leader and a person. It’s a chance for you to define and act on your vision and goals. It’s a chance for you to grow. As I’m fond of saying over and over again, Stephen Covey says that communication is the most important skill in life.
As an executive coach I help people achieve their goals and live their visions by becoming great communicators. Great communicators who know what to say, how to say it and why they’re saying it make a powerful contribution to the world.
My mission is simple. I help innovators become great communicators so they can scale up to change the world!
Communication is the essential last mile in finding and motivating the right teams, acquiring strong allies, powerfully bonding with customers, and capturing mindshare with compelling stories. Nothing will serve you and your vision better than developing exceptional communication skills.
