The Coronavirus doesn’t care about your business. If your user conference is canceled, how can you connect with customers watching the digital version on a small screen?
First: Focus entirely on your audience. Every great talk is a gift, not a performance. When people watch you on a screen, they unconsciously evaluate you – Are you genuinely trying to help them? If you care about them, they’ll feel it and pay attention. If you don’t, they won’t.
Second: Tell stories. Stories activate hormones in our brains that capture and retain our attention. Your audience has to know how the hero gets out of that pickle. They’ll listen to you just to hear the happy ending.
Third: Be brief. A two-hour keynote with demos and customers is standard in the tech industry. Cut your virtual keynote down to a tightly-scripted and edited thirty minutes to keep your audience engaged with the essential news. Less is much more. Add links for customer soundbites, demos, product details.
If you and your team are working on refining and preparing to present content for your virtual conference, I’d love to help! In the meantime, keep that hand sanitizer handy and enjoy being at home!
