We fear change. Our brains fear change. Laying down a new neural pathway takes energy and attention! How can you get your team, your customers, or your partners to change?
Peter Denning and Robert Dunham’s The Innovators Way is my favorite book on this topic. Here’s what they say: “Innovation is the adoption of a new practice in a community…Innovation does not cause adoption. It is adoption.”
Denning and Dunham remind us that when you stand up and tell the world you’re going to solve a problem, it’s “not an event, it is a process.” You keep offering, you keep encouraging people to try, you keep asking them to adopt. For, like, MONTHS. YEARS.
What do you do? Become a cheerleader and a problem-solver to everyone who’s trying to pave the new neural pathway that your wonderful innovation requires. “Leaders and managers frequently articulate the value of the new practice and track whether value’s being delivered.”
True change is a slow, bumpy, and perpetual communications process, but it’s worth it!
Take the risk out of being in the spotlight! I can prepare you, your teams and your leaders to tell your company’s story with confidence, shape the industry and maybe even change the world.
