The 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer found that 56 percent of respondents believe business leaders are “purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false”. But you are not like the other business leaders that are lying! You are a great person! You don’t lie! This isn’t fair!!
Nope. It’s not fair. (Is anything??) It is, however, reality. When you’re a “Founder” or a “CEO” or even the group’s “Vice President”, your team doesn’t see you, Carmella, or you, Ted. They see the CEO walking into the room. CEOs are powerful. And scary. And might not be telling the truth.
Humans have conscious and unconscious biases about leaders, based on their previous experiences. Those biases form a fog through which they see you and everything you do.
When you accept that this fog surrounds you, rather than rage against it, you can start to make progress. When you behave and communicate so clearly and consistently, even through the fog, people start to perceive who you are. When you master clear, consistent, simple communication (backed up by actions), you become a beacon of light in the fog that surrounds us all.
